Meat And Cheese Trays Platter
How Do You Cope With All The Cooking At Family Gatherings?
I really enjoy having my family over for a big meal, it doesn’t need to be a special occasion but I don’t like to do it too often as it does require a lot of work to get everything ready. If you only have a small family then you are probably going to be ok, but if you don’t then the first thing you need to do is make room for everybody! That isn’t the hardest bit though, obviously the thing that takes the most effort is all the preparation and cooking that you need to do.
The biggest single part of the meal will usually be the meat, or whatever the meat is contained in if you create something like a marrow stuffed with mince (very tasty if you haven’t tried) or a lasagna for instance. You should be looking for something that can comfortably feed everyone, but that doesn’t take a lot of fuss to prepare. While turkey is usually only eaten at thanksgiving, then really I think it is a great choice and people should enjoy it more often. Yes there is a bit of preparation that needs to go into cooking a turkey, but nowhere near as much as something like a casserole which needs to be prepared from scratch, so you end up saving yourself a lot of time and effort.
It is not all plain sailing with a turkey though, if you don’t cook it properly it can be a disaster. If you want to make sure your turkey tastes nice and juicy after cooking then the only way really is to use an electric turkey fryer. By frying it in oil then it traps the juices inside the meat as it cooks, while making the skin crisp. The safest option you have for frying is an electric turkey fryer which works inside. They are a lot more stable and can be put out of the way so they aren’t knocked over like the outdoor ones are, and they have a thermostat to regulate the temperature too.
Now that part is sorted then you need to decide all the extras that you want to have with it. Some of it will be things you always make, maybe things you know your guests love, or thing you are particularly good at making. Then for the rest look in your refrigerator and cupboards to see what you need to use up for the rest, there is no point in shopping for new ingredients when you have some perfectly good food going to waste already! I find the secret to getting the quantities right for a big meal is to allocate each person a certain number of every item, rather than just filling a tray up and hoping. For instance with roast potatoes maybe two per adult and one for the children.
Then you need an impressive dessert to finish things off. Personally I think this is the biggest time waster of the lot. Don’t fret about making this yourself, nobody really cares if you did or not after all the work you put into making the main meal. You could actually ask someone to bring the dessert if you know one of the guests is good at making them, or you can just pop to the supermarket and grab one from there.
